Working With Chainsaws in Trees

1. Using chainsaws in trees is a common task in tree care, but even those that are experts can experience potential exposures to injuries. Not only is there a potential for ergonomic injuries, but struck-by and falling from heights as well.

2. Keeping chainsaws in good condition is helpful when preventing injuries. Complete a visual inspection before use and check that all safety features are working properly.

3. Chainsaws should have a firm grip to keep control of the direction of the saw and avoid kickback. Always keep both hands on the chainsaw when cutting and keep a firm grip on the handles.

4. When using a chainsaw from standing timber, never cut above your shoulders as cutting would require you to hold the chain saw at arms length. Holding the chainsaw away from your body can cause you to lose control as well as ergonomic issues by holding an awkward posture.

5. Always plan before cutting. Take a look at your work area and perform a pre-work audit.

6. Not only should you plan where to cut, but how you're going to cut it. Check your position to make sure it doesn't feel awkward. If you need to hold the position for a long time, would it hurt?

7. To avoid kickback from the chainsaw, never use the tip of the saw bar. The larger the bar nose, the higher the risk.

8. Proper chainsaw maintenance can reduce your risk for kickback. Make sure your chain isn't dull, has proper tension, and that the saw doesn't have any bent, crack, or broken components.

9. Proper PPE includes cut-resistant leg protection, safety glasses, and gloves. Follow any additional PPE requirements your company policy may have.
