Use this meeting to discuss how to do a Vehicle Pre-use Inspection.
1. Before using a vehicle there are a number of items that need to be checked to ensure a safe trip
2. You will want to check your brake lights, emergency lights, turn signals, windshield wipers, horn, seat belt, and brakes.
3. To verify the turn signals are working and you don't have someone to visually verify, for most vehicles, when the turn signal is on but the light is not working the clicking sound you hear is different. Check the operating manual for specifics for your vehicle.
4. To verify the brakes are working, put the vehicle in gear and press the brake.
5. The horn is an emergency tool to get other people's attention. Honk it to verify it works, however wait until people have passed by so a hazard is not created.
6. You will want to check the fluid levels of the oil, fuel, power steering, coolant, and wiper fluid.
7. You will want to check that the belts and hoses are in good condition and free of nicks and cuts.
8. Make sure to check the tires as well. They should be inflated to the optimum levels printed on them. Make sure there is a good amount of tread on the tire and check that the rims are free of damage. Always keep a tire pressure gauge in your vehicle.
9. If a trailer is attached to the vehicle, check that the trailer is secure to the hitch. Safety chains should also be used in the even that the trailer comes off the hitch.
10. Verify that the vehicle has a fire extinguisher and a first aid kit if they are required.
11. Last but not least don't forget to adjust the driver mirrors before leaving.
