Topics

1. A struck-by incident is when a person is struck by an object or equipment. Struck-by hazards are categorized as flying, falling, swinging, and rolling objects.

2. Common struck-by hazards in poured concrete are falling, rolling, and swinging objects, moving equipment, and flying particles.

3. One way to prevent struck-by incidents is housekeeping. Cleaning up tools, organizing shelves, stacking materials neatly, and removing items that lean against walls can prevent falling objects.

4. Barricades and work zones should be set up to identify work areas. This includes mobile equipment operations, loading and unloading activities, and overhead operations.

5. Signage should identify when there are low beams, pipes, overhead work platforms, or other potential overhead hazards. Signage should be maintained properly by replacing faded or outdated signs and ensuring it provides clear and accurate information.

6. When mobile equipment is traveling, use traffic control and flagging to direct traffic.

7. Operators should never allow loads to pass overhead of personnel and loads should be strapped securely.

8. Swinging of an overhead crane hook is a common struck-by injury that can be avoided by raising the hook out of the working area.

9. Pay attention while walking, limit cell phone usage, and keep your eyes ahead to scan for any hazards in your walking path.

10. Use PPE to protect yourself from struck-by hazards. Hard hats, gloves, foot protection, and eye safety can protect you from debris and material that may cause injury.

11. Communication with coworkers is key in a successful and safe work day. If there is a need to enforce Stop Work Authority, say it loud so everyone can hear. Ensure that all hazards are cleared up before resuming work.

12. What other struck-by hazards can the group identify at the worksite? What are some solutions to prevent injuries?
