Topics

1. Since much of tree care work occurs up in the air, stuck-by hazards are very common. Not only can limbs and branches fall, but tools being used by employees, projectiles, and items from buckets can cause potential overhead injuries.

2. The prevention of falling objects is difficult when trimming trees. However, an effective way of preventing injuries is by creating a Drop Zone and barricading a work area.

3. Determine which equipment to use and inspect before use. If you're using a ladder, check to see if it's in good condition. If using an Aerial lift, complete a pre-use inspection.

4. Wear the right PPE for the daily operations, including a hard hat to protect against injury from overhead falling objects.

5. If rigging is required, and an employee will be climbing trees, make sure they are properly trained and that the equipment is in good condition for the climb.

6. Utilize cones, signage, and other equipment to establish a drop zone. Training is required for all employees for entering the drop zone.

7. Ground workers must maintain a distance of at least two times the height of the tree. Keeping a distance away can prevent injury not only from felled trees, but also from potential projectiles or debris.

8. Communication between overhead workers and grounds personnel is extremely important and can alert everyone of potential hazards.

9. Have your emergency procedures in place and discuss prior to the start of operations. Having the policy is important, but so is verbal training and confirmation of understanding.

10. What other struck-by hazards can the group identify at the worksite? What are some solutions to prevent injuries?
