Use this safety meeting to discuss potential struck-by injuries due to falling objects.
1. Because of the tools and types of work performed, stuck-by hazards are very common in landscaping. Not only can limbs and branches fall, but tools and equipment being used by workers nearby can cause projectiles or falling objects.
2. Determine which equipment to use and inspect before use. Inspect all landscaping equipment before use to ensure it is in good working order.
3. An effective way of preventing injuries caused by falling objects is by barricading a work are to create a Drop Zone. Utilize cones, signage, and other equipment to establish notify workers of the drop zone. Training is required for all employees before entering the drop zone.
4. An effective way to prevent injuries caused by projectiles is to ensure your area is clear of debris before utilzing motorized lawn equipment.
5. Communication between workers is extremely important and can alert everyone of potential hazards.
6. Wear the right PPE for the daily operations being performed: Cover your eyes and face from potential projectiles when using lawn equipment. When performing tree trimming, wear hard hats from protection from falling objects. When performing masonry or light construction work, wear gloves and proper footwear for protection from falling objects.
