Use this safey meeting to discuss ergonomic exposures, such as heavy lifting and repetitive tasks, that electrical contractors may face on their worksite.
1. Ergonomic-related injuries are one of the most common injuries to occur in the workplace. These types of injuries are usually related to strains and sprains and can be caused by several different factors.
2. Heavy, frequent, and awkward lifting is a common exposure that results in injuries that leave workers sore at the end of the day. If a lift is greater than 50 pounds, always ask for assistance and use appropriate lift devices (mechanical or manual) whenever possible.
3. Whenever lifting, be sure to use proper lifting technique. Always bend at your knees while maintaining a straight back and lift with your legs. Hold the load close to your body.
4. Consider using utility carts that are easy to push and pull in order to move material around a worksite.
5. When performing repetitive tasks you are putting yourself at a greater risk of injury. It is important to arrange your work area by placing equipment and material nearby and so that it is more easily accessible as you work.
6. It is also important to take small breaks throughout the day to allow your body time to recover. Try some light stretching before work, during your break, and once you're home.
7. Electrical work involves a lot of hand-intensive work, so try to break up similar tasks throughout the day to avoid doing the same thing over and over.
8. Always use tools that allow you to get to tight places easier, but also give you the torque and leverage that you need to perform your job efficiently.
9. When kneeling or working in awkward spaces for an extended period of time, consider using a foam pad to provide support to your knees, back, or head.
10. What is a job site that you have been on that left you sore at the end of the day, and what do you think could have been done differently to avoid that?
11. By being aware of your own body and wellness you are taking initiative and overall putting yourself in the best position to work more efficiently and pain free.
