Use this safety meeting to review rigging basics before performing a lift.
1. When performing an overhead lift, there are many potential struck-by exposures that could lead to injuries, including falling, swinging, and flying objects. Always take your rigging material into consideration to prevent these types of exposures.
2. The most commonly used rigging material includes slings (nylon, wire rope, chain, etc.), shackles, and hooks. Employees should be trained on rigging to learn about all material that can be used in lifting operations.
3. Before a lift begins, it is recommended to have a written plan. Take the time to select rigging during the planning stage.
4. Visually inspect rigging before use. Check for damage and also look for identification tags.
5. When setting up operations, set up work zones and barriers to prevent unauthorized personnel entering the area.
6. Rigging can also cause pinch points and crush hands. Never leave your hands between the sling and the load you are lifting.
7. Remain in constant contact with operators or signal personnel when setting up for a lift. Everyone should know the hand signal for "emergency stop" and enforce Stop Work Authority when needed.
8. Rigging should always be stored in a dry, covered area. When you are finished for the day, put rigging away.
