Use this safety meeting to discuss struck-by hazards and how PPE can help prevent struck-by incidents during Tree Care operations.
1. Proper PPE during tree care operations can help prevent injuries from struck-by hazards.
2. Head protection is a good way to prevent injuries from potential overhead hazards. Climbing helmets should be worn by those climbing in trees while hard hats should be worn by employees on the ground.
3. Eye protection is required to be worn during operations. Along with eye protection, wear face protection whenever there is a possibility of flying debris, like chainsaw use or during chipper operations.
4. It's found that sometimes employees won't wear safety glasses due to fogging, especially if they're wearing a face shield or brush guard. The assumption is that the shield or guard will protect their eyes from any debris. However, this is not correct and debris will go through a mesh guard or around a shield. There are many anti-fog eye protection options as well as mesh eye protection that meets Z87.1.
5. Due to the level of noise during operations, typically over the 85 dBA measurement, hearing protection must be worn by employees. Options for hearing protection are typically earplugs or earmuffs, but find what is both effective and comfortable for you during the work day.
6. Pants should be worn to protect your legs from thrown objects. Chaps are an additional recommendation if working with chainsaws.
7. Non-slip boots will help provide firm footing. Also consider boots with some visibility. When using a chainsaw, your boot can become camouflaged in the earth. With some visibility in your boot, you can see your feet in proximity to the chainsaw.
8. High-visibility clothing should be worn to alert coworkers and any potential oncoming roadway traffic of your presence. In addition, chipper operators should wear a tear-away option.
9. What other PPE should be worn to prevent injuries at the workplace?
