Aerial lifts include scissor lifts, bucket trucks, cherry pickers, etc. Use this meeting to remind your team of the dangers associated with working at heights and OSHA guidelines for lift safety.
1. Each year, construction workers are killed or injured while using this equipment: - They were not wearing a harness and fell off the equipment. - They fell with the equipment when it tipped over. - They were electrocuted when the equipment touched a power line or electrical wires.
2. OSHA Construction Standard 1926.453(b)(2)(ii) Only authorized persons [designated by the employer] shall operate an aerial lift.
3. Aerial lifts include scissor lifts, boom lifts, bucket trucks and cherry pickers. Each year, construction workers are killed or injured while using this equipment because they: - Were not wearing a harness and fell off the equipment; - Fell with the equipment when it tipped over; or - Were electrocuted when the equipment touched a power line or electrical wires.
4. Remember this before operating an aerial lift: - Check operating and emergency controls. - Check the tires for cuts, bulges and proper pressure - Look for damaged, unreadable or missing safety signs and placards. - Check the guardrails and chains to ensure they are intact and secure.
5. Follow manufacturer’s instructions and set outriggers, brakes, and wheel chocks, even if on a level surface. Look for a level surface that won’t shift. Never exceed the manufacturer’s slope or wind velocity limits.
6. Look for potential hazards such as potholes, bumps, debris that could cause the lift to tip over.
7. Avoid contact with overhead hazards such as electrical wires or power lines.
8. Ask your supervisor if the electrical wires or power lines near the work have been de-energized or guarded.
9. Close lift-platform chains or doors, and check guardrails – OSHA requires guardrails on scissor lifts.
10. Check personal fall protection equipment, if there are signs of damage your employer should give you a new one.
11. Look for leaks of air, hydraulic fluid, and fuel.
12. Always follow the procedures in the user manual.
13. If working near traffic or pedestrian walkways, set up cones and signs as work zone warnings.
14. While operating an aerial lift Always close lift-platform chains or doors.
15. Always wear fall arrest equipment with lanyard attached to a designated anchor point.
16. Always stand on the floor of the lift or bucket. Do not climb on or lean over the guardrails.
17. Do not exceed the load limits or use the equipment to hoist materials.
18. Do not drive an aerial lift with the lift extended, unless designed for that purpose.
