Pneumatic nailers/nail guns/staplers are responsible for an estimated 37,000 ER visits yearly. Use this safety meeting to communicate the correct procedures for these powerful devices around others.
1. Nail gun injuries are responsible for an estimated 37,000 emergency room visits each year.
2. Avoid horseplay.
3. Safety features should be left intact or you could nail your foot to the deck --- it does happen.
4. Always wear appropriate eye protection when using any air gun.
5. Hearing protection is often required depending on the noise level.
6. Operate the tool according to manufacturer's guidelines.
7. Never use more air pressure than necessary (seldom more than 90 psi). Excessive pressure exerts more force, causing harder cycles. It is hard on tools and generates more flying debris.
8. Always keep the nose of the tool pointed toward the work-piece or downward when air charged. Never point towards yourself or others.
9. Ensure all safety features are intact and operational. Make sure they are not disabled and are functioning properly.
10. During use, hold the nose of the gun firmly against the work-piece.
11. Always disconnect tool from air-line when clearing a jam or when not in use. Keep hoses and fittings in good condition.
12. When unjamming, hold the gun away from you, open the barrel and use the release lever to remove the jammed nail.
13. Avoid awkward position nailing where the tool and its recoil are difficult to control. Examples: Nailing from a ladder, nailing above shoulder height, toe-nailing, etc.
14. Never carry air-gun with your finger on the trigger. Accidental discharge and injury may result.
15. Keep your free hand clear of air gun's nose during use.
16. Tie-off and secure the air hose when working on a roof or scaffold to prevent the tool from falling on others.
17. Always move forward when working a nailer or stapler on a roof so you do not inadvertently trip or fall from the roof.
18. Never use volatile bottled gas to operate pneumatic fasteners.
19. Never operate air guns around flammables; sparks may cause a fire.
