Topics

1. Distracted driving is when you do an activity that will take your attention away from driving. Being distracted is one of the leading causes of motor vehicle crashes that can result in fatalities.

2. Getting wrapped up in your thoughts is an easy way to be distracted while driving. Make the conscious effort to be a defensive driver and actively pay attention to the road.

3. Cell phones are a large part of distracted driving. Cell phones can take your eyes off the road, take your hands off the wheel, and take your mind off of driving. Choose a hands free option and save the texting for later.

4. When carpooling or driving with coworkers, you will likely talk to each other. Getting wrapped up in conversation can distract your mind and eyes from the road. Keep your eyes on the road and make driving your priority.

5. As a passenger in a vehicle, do not distract the driver. Let the driver pay attention to the road and be a good defensive driver.

6. Try to avoid eating while driving. Eating involves taking at least one hand off of your steering wheel and your eyes off the road, giving you less time to react.

7. Always follow the rules and laws of the road. Follow posted speed limits and slow down if driving in poor conditions.

8. Keep your eyes moving. It is easy to get tunnel vision when looking through the windshield. Shift your eyes from ahead, to your left mirror, back to looking ahead. Repeat this with your rearview mirror and right mirror.

9. In what other ways can you be distracted while driving?
