Use this safey meeting to discuss Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in the Janitorial industry.
1. Janitorial workers are exposed to many hazards and it’s important to recognize when PPE should be used, what to select, and how to properly wear it.
2. The type of PPE that is provided to janitorial workers depends greatly on the types of hazards that they are going to be exposed to while on the job.
3. Head protection should be worn when there are exposures to falling objects, penetrating objects, flying materials, or debris. Hard hats are recommended for these types of hazards.
4. If working in an area where feet and legs are at risk for injury, workers should be dressed appropriately and wearing safety shoes. Foot protection should be non-slip and waterproof.
5. Eye and face injuries can be caused by handling chemicals, waste, and debris. It’s recommended to wear goggles when working with liquids.
6. Hearing protection should be worn when working in areas that have high noise levels. Earplugs and earmuffs are two examples.
7. Hand protection, like latex/chemical proof gloves, should be worn when working with chemicals. This will prevent chemical burns and infections on hands.
8. A respirator should be worn when working around harmful dusts, fumes, gasses, and sprays. A medical evaluation will likely be required for fit-testing and training must be completed before use.
9. What are some exposures that will need PPE?
