Use this safety meeting to discuss potential electric hazards in Farm Maintenance Shops.
1. In order to properly and safely service farm equipment and vehicles, it's important to inspect and maintain electrical tools, as well as inspect your shop for potential electrical hazards.
2. All corded tools and extension cords should be placed in a designated area not only for cleanliness, but also to extend the life of your tools and equipment.
3. Keep cords away from heat, oil, chemicals, and other solvents that can damage insulation.
4. All corded equipment and extension cords should only be used for their intended purposes and be inspected prior to each use. If there are any signs of damages or defects they must be immediately removed from service.
5. Make sure you select the right extension cord for the job, or move your job closer to an outlet. Plugging in two extension cords together for additional length will reduce the amperage rating, increasing the risk of an electric shock.
6. Never use corded equipment in wet areas and when plugging and unplugging in equipment, make sure your hands are clean and dry. If you're wearing gloves, don't wear any that have excess chemicals on them in case of a spark.
7. While servicing equipment or vehicles, check that safety guards are in place and equipment is properly locked out and tagged out until the service is completed and the hazard no longer exists.
8. It is important to inspect the shop for potential electrical hazards. All damaged, defective, or exposed electrical wiring must be removed from service immediately to avoid electric shock, burns, fire, or even death.
9. Keep all stored materials, trash, and other debris at least three-feet away from electrical cabinets and fire extinguishers.
10. Obey all high voltage safety decals and other signage. If you notice a safety sign is starting to fade, alert your supervisor so signage can be replaced.
11. In what other ways can you protect your shop from electrical hazards?
