Falling Materials in Construction
Topics

1. One of the most common struck-by exposures in Construction to consider is falling material and debris.

2. It is common that people look down or straight ahead when they walk. Take the time to look up every now and then to scan for overhead hazards.

3. Read safety signs when they are posted. There might be a warning of overhead work that is not in direct sight. Avoid areas where work is being done overhead.

4. Work platforms should always have a toe board to prevent tools, material, and other debris from falling off. Safety nets can also be installed under platforms to catch material.

5. If a crane or other type of mobile equipment is lifting material, do not approach their area until the lift is complete. Never walk underneath a suspended load.

6. When finishing up for the day, clean up work platforms by securing tools, material, and disposing trash. Never leave a suspended load overnight.

7. It is likely that a hard hat is required at your jobsite when there are overhead or falling material exposures. Inspect your hard hat daily for damage and get a new one if needed.
