Use this meeting to discuss exit routes at the workplace.
1. Every day you know how to get to your work area and how to leave to go home. But, do you know how to escape in an emergency?
2. Exit routes are a continuous and unobstructed path of exit, a permanent part of the workplace, and must lead directly to the outside. It is important to keep material storage away from emergency exits so personnel can leave without hazards.
3. Two exits are required at every workplace. However, more routes may be required depending on the size of the building, number of employees, and how the workplace is set up.
4. Doors with side hinges that lead to exits, and all exit doors, must swing out in the direction of exit travel.
5. One of the tragedies of the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire is that exit doors were locked, and employees could not escape the fire. OSHA requires that exit doors are unlocked from the INSIDE.
6. Discuss the exit routes for your workplace. If an emergency were to happen, from your workstation, how would you exit the building?
