1. Exposure to the cold can cause "cold stress", which occurs by driving down body temperature, and can result in serious injuries or health problems. Wearing appropriate clothing to maintain a warm body temperature is one of the most important steps in preparing for cold weather or cold environments.
2. It is recommended to wear at least three layers of clothing for better insulation. These layers should be loose as tight layers can reduce blood circulation.
3. It's also a good idea to wear clothing that will keep you dry. Wet clothing can decrease the body temperature and cause you to lose body heat quickly.
4. Wear hats and gloves to keep your extremities warm. If you start to get hot, unzip your jacket or remove a layer, but keep your head and hands covered to prevent too much heat loss.
5. For your feet, it is recommended to wear wool socks. Wool is not only an insulator for heat, but also wicks away moisture and can keep your feet dry.
6. Take your breaks in a warm area. Your body can get tired from cold weather and taking a break in a warm area can help re-energize.
7. Drinking too many warm or hot drinks, like coffee and hot chocolate, can dehydrate you. Stay hydrated by drinking water and other hydrating liquids.
8. In addition to staying warm and hydrated, check your surroundings for any weather related issues. If there is snow on the ground, create a clear path to walk. If there is ice, attempt to melt by using salt or other de-icing material.
9. Keep your hands out of your pockets. Always have at least one hand free to keep your balance and cushion yourself during a potential fall.
