Topics

1. Using earth moving equipment is an efficient way to trench, however damage to equipment can be costly and injuries can be fatal. Potential hazards are struck-by, falling from heights, caught-in, and electrocution.

2. The most important safety of any mobile equipment is proper training. Operators must go through safety and operations training before they can operate. Retraining is also important as bad habits can be learned over time.

3. Conduct a daily inspection or after each shift when used on multiple shifts. This includes both a visual and physical inspection. If deficiencies are found during the inspection, tag the forklift out of service until repairs can be made.

4. Set up barriers and post signage to designate a working area to keep unauthorized personnel out of the area. Set up a travel area for the equipment to travel safely.

5. Do not work within 10 feet of electrical power sources including power lines and transformers and be aware of overhead hazards like utilities, branches, and overhangs.

6. Underground utilities should be located, marked, and utility companies should be contacted to alert of the excavation. Hitting underground utilities with earth moving equipment can cause serious injuries, damage utility equipment resulting in fines, and create outages.

7. Visibility can be difficult for operators with earth moving equipment. If your equipment has an obstructed view to the rear, do not drive or operate in reverse unless it is equipped with a reverse signal alarm. Instead, ask for a spotter to help direct you.

8. When removing soil, place at least two feet away from the trenching area and don't park equipment next to trenches. Give yourself at least 10 feet clearance

9. Among authorized personnel, a ground person or signal person should be in sight of the operator to communicate any potential hazards.

10. Follow your company's PPE requirements. All personnel in the area should be wearing high-visibility clothing and/or PPE when working in equipment areas.

11. In what other ways can you avoid potential injuries when working around earth moving equipment?
