Concrete Formwork Safety
Topics

1. Concrete formwork has the potential for many types of exposures. There are possibilities of impalement if rebar is left unprotected and blowouts can create struck-by or caught-in injuries.

2. A qualified person should be available at the site while installing and placing concrete to keep watch for any potentially dangerous situations.

3. Check that there is a good supply of personnel available on site. Is there enough personnel to assist if there was an emergency situation?

4. Temporary bracing must be in good condition while setting formwork and all formwork is braced correctly against wind and other potential forces.

5. All form components that show excessive wear or are damaged should be replaced immediately and not used.

6. When rebar is exposed, it's important to protect the rebar to prevent injuries including impalement. Form panels should be braced and tied to each other.

7. When installing walls, check for efficient strength, spacing, and that joints are staggered.

8. After wall forms have been installed, safe access must be provided by either ladders or work platforms.

9. Never overload formwork. Concrete should never be placed in a way that could exceed the capacity.

10. Always wear eye protection, foot protection, gloves, and hard hats for any potential overhead exposures. In addition, high vis PPE should be worn to alert personnel of your location while on site.

11. In what other ways can we protect ourselves when forming?
