Topics

1. Sharp objects can cause cuts or punctures. Whether it's tools or materials, take the time to recognize potential sharp hazards.

2. Select the right tool for the job. Using a box cutter in place of a screwdriver might not be the best option.

3. Hand tools like knives, box cutters, chisels, snips/pliers, and screwdrivers all have sharp edges or tips that can lead to punctures.

4. Power tools like saws, drills, and nail guns can also cause sharp injuries, even while not operating. Be aware of hand placement when moving tools around the site to prevent injuries.

5. Keep sharp tools covered or sheathed to prevent accidental punctures or cuts.

6. Keep tools sharp to prevent having to use extra force. Also, stabilize the material you are working with to prevent the material from slipping.

7. If any tools require guards, make sure they are in good condition and in place before starting work.

8. Many types of materials can have sharp objects protruding, like wood, metal, glass, and certain types of plastic. Be aware of anything that might stick you if you have to grab or work with it.

9. Sharp objects can also fall from overhead if working around overhead platforms. Make sure to keep your area picked up, keep tools away from edges of overhead platforms, and make sure toe guards are installed where required.

10. Hand placement and body positioning is important when working with or near sharp exposures.

11. Wearing the correct PPE is important to prevent sharp injuries. Gloves, safety glasses, and protective footwear are a good start for protecting yourself.

12. Cut resistant gloves are the most effective PPE for your hands when working with sharp tools and objects.

13. Sharp objects may be unsanitary and can cause infection if injuries are not treated correctly.

14. If you were to get a cut or puncture, quickly treat it with first aid supplies.
